The Play with Heart – Michael Esquibel Athletic Foundation was created to honor the life and legacy of Michael Alfred Esquibel — a beloved athlete, coach, artist, and mentor.
Michael believed in doing everything with heart. Whether on the baseball field, in the classroom, or in a chalk drawing — tucked away in some corner ‘with the kids’, — he showed up fully and gave his all.
He coached kids with compassion. He rooted for the underdog. And he always had time for the quiet ones — the kids who just needed someone to believe in them.
This foundation carries that spirit forward.
Through annual scholarships for student-athletes and young artists across New Mexico, we’re creating opportunity, celebrating resilience, and giving with heart — just like Mike did.

Michael played baseball at a collegiate level, coached youth teams to national titles, and inspired countless young people with his belief in their potential. He also had a deep love for art — especially chalk drawing — and was never afraid to express himself creatively.
Whether in a dugout, a classroom, or a quiet sketchbook, Michael led with kindness and fire. This foundation is our way of carrying his legacy and light forward.
